Cajal Club at SfN Chicago 2024
The Cajal Club held its annual Board of Directors Meeting and Business Meeting on October 5th at the Marriott. The club discussed their evolving partnership with the International Brain Bee, an organization committed to inspiring the next generation of neuroscientists. Leah Krubitzer passed the presidency to Paola Arlotta, with Nenad Šestan named as President-Elect.
On October 6th, the club co-hosted an SfN-sponsored social titled: Development of the Cerebral Cortex: from Embryos to Organoids Social. It was chaired by Paola Arlotta and Leah Krubitzer and featured guest speakers that included Debby Silver, Aparna Bhaduri, Tomasz Nowakowski, Pasko Rakic, Hongkui Zeng, Nenad Šestan, John Rubenstein, Leah Krubitzer, Liqun Luo, and Larry Swanson. Linda Richards paid tribute to her mentor the late Denis O’Leary.

The annual Cajal Club Dinner, held on October 6th at Beatnik On The River, served as a celebratory evening of recognition and camaraderie. The highlight of the night was the presentation of the Krieg Lifetime Achievement Award to Dr. Larry W. Swanson, honoring his pioneering research on brain structure and function. Swanson’s contributions, including high-resolution CNS network models and translations of Cajal’s seminal works, have profoundly shaped modern neuroscience.

Other distinguished awards presented during the evening included:
• Krieg Cortical Kudos Awards
-
Discoverer Award: John Morrison
-
Explorer Award: Cory Miller
-
Scholar Award: Xuyu Qian
• Brain Structure and Function Editor’s Choice Award – Eric Sobierajsky
As the Cajal Club continues to honor the legacy of its namesake, SfN Chicago 2024 proved to be a momentous occasion for both recognizing excellence and fostering the next wave of scientific discovery.
